Do some of those actually take pictures of speeders?  All the ones in my area are just there to alert drivers of their speeds in speeding tendency areas.

Not exactly related, but there are a couple of permanent units like that on campus. A few years back when I was commut ing with vette, on one particular road into campus I made it game to see how big of a number I could put up on it, starting from around the speed limit at the furthest point is picked up the car, and then accelerating in 2nd gear until I was too close for where it was aimed. I did this every work day. I must have caused an anomaly in the data it collected, because after a few months it stopped displaying a speed at all over a certain amount. I’d like to think someone at the campus police department noticed someone was challenging it nearly every morning at the same time and changed the programming.

I saw one in Iceland that just displayed green smiley face (under the limit)/red frowny face (over the limit). Honestly probably a better way to do things. Maybe because speeding is so common we’d need a :| for slightly over the limit.

This one has a red light underneath it that flashes at you starting at 2 or 3mph over the limit.  After I had an effect on it, it now shuts off both the red light and the number display completely past 14 over.

I know the ones I saw in Washington state just said “Slow down” whenever you were more than 15mph over the speed limit to prevent that :(

Yep they all do that, at 10 over in my area. Probably to stop people from seeing how high it will go (not that the thought crosses my mind every time I drive near one).

Did you hear this story about db meters?

I had not, but it doesn’t surprise me. I guess I should add that I only played for high score on the way to work in the morning. There were no people or traffic to really speak of around at the time. The only thing along that particular road at 7:30am are the cows with windows in them.  Yes, we actually do have cows on the main campus. They didn’t seem to mind 2nd gear pulls in the corvette every morning.

Canada is so nice they didn’t do a sting and impound every obscenely loud vehicle for miles around after they hit their high score. Apparently one of these meters attracted near round the clock attention because it was easy to park under and offered suitable accommodations for a good sized crowd of spectators.

That’s thing about toys... If you give them to people they play with them. Considering the amount of fun I can have with handheld infrared laser thermometer, I can imagine the temptation to play for high score with a permanently mounted dB meter. I also take the position that every man is still a twelve year old boy inside, we just differ in degrees of openly embracing it ( or not) .
